Discount chains like Lidl and Aldi have increased their market share, putting pressure on the upscale British grocery store. Waitrose is still ranked first in a recent Market Force Information survey on the perceptions of customers about seven supermarket chains. The survey was conducted with 4,300 people who rated supermarkets based on their assortment as well as layout and cleanliness.

Waitrose has taken a variety of steps to safeguard customers and staff during the coronavirus outbreak. Customers are asked to send only one person to shop and wear a scarf or mask. Hand sanitiser stations are located in the front of every shop. Waitrose offers the Volunteer's Card for customers who are self-isolating which allows family members and friends to purchase items on behalf of the customer.
