The high-end British retailer has had to contend with increasing competition from discount chains such as Lidl and Aldi that have been increasing their market share. Waitrose is still ranked top in an earlier Market Force Information survey on customer perceptions about seven supermarket chains. The survey was conducted with 4300 customers who rated supermarkets on their assortment, layout and cleanliness.

In the midst of the coronavirus epidemic, Waitrose has added several additional measures to protect customers and staff. Customers are required to bring only one person to shop and wear a scarf or mask. Hand sanitiser stations are also situated at the front of every shop. Waitrose offers the Volunteer's Shop Card for shoppers who are self-isolated, allowing friends and family to collect their orders on their behalf.
